The Sleeping Beauty

performed by Durham University Ballet Company

This was a small project I did as a freebie for Durham University Ballet Company, as a return favour for them providing me with a test audience for Doctor Coppelius. They were short of someone to design/operate the lights at the Gala, and I've always wanted to operate the lights at the Gala, so it was a win-win situation as far as I was concerned.

Quite a challenge, as I had about eight hours to get the hang of a lighting console I'd never seen before and work out what looks good as a lighting plot on a stage whose size I've never operated on before. For this particular console, one thing I learned the hard way was that if you press the innocent-looking Escape key, it buggers up everything and I have to make another embarrassing trips to the senior Gala techie to fix it. There were still some teething problems in the first performance. But I thought the second one went pretty well, and I was quite pleased with what we ended up with.

Many thanks to the fabulous Dandya Chen for pictures that showed both my lighting and the rest of the production so well. With her permission, I have included a selection of the photographs below. You can see more on her Instagram page here, here and here.
